Dave with Josefus (1978)

Dave with Josefus (1978)

When the original Josefus broke up,
Dave continued searching for a group
and a situation where he could be
writing original music. After three
Texas bands and several months in
the Los Angeles area, he decided that
he'd had enough of the music business.

He moved back to Texas and took a job
driving a delivery van. As he drove,
he was listening to rock radio all day,
and tired of hearing the same songs
over and over. He eventually discovered
the classical music station, and it changed
the way he thought about his own music.

As he listened to Bach and Beethoven, he
began to imagine rock music being played by
an orchestra of acoustic and electric guitars.
Dave finally started to write music again,
creating an album-length instrumental
composition for guitars. Only guitars.

Two early recordings from it were on a
compilation EP produced by a Houston
musicians co-op, but the complete piece
was never recorded. Following a brief
regrouping of Josefus in 1978-79, he
left the music scene again for what he
was certain would be the final time.

But he never stopped making music,
and following a family tragedy returned
to the studio to complete the project.
Dave's new album is Without Good-Bye,
titled in memory of his father and son.
